The title looks like it's gunning for classic B movie territory, with a lot of trashy fun to be had along the way, but what you actually get is a cloyingly sentimental story of love, loss and regret with a barely a passing nod to those exploitation staples.

Basically, neither Hitler nor Bigfoot needed to be in this movie spoiler: they barely are and it feels distinctly like a cynical ploy to slip this schmaltzy nonsense under the radar of genre fans everywhere.

It's well shot, though almost unbearably slick, and the score is pure Zimmer-lite; all uplifting strings, swelling bombastically with emotional resonance.

Frankly, this film is…. Review by karen h. I never thought in my life I'd ever utter such a strange title, much less enjoy it thoroughly.

Sam Elliott plays an old man whose coming to grips with his age and loneliness and ongoing suffering of PTSD from his time in the war.

He never once shows a sense of pride - considering he's the man who killed Hitler - and almost feels remorse in a weird way. It's a great spin on the war genre.

We get about an hour into the film and learn his…. Well, that was a bizarre watch. Based on the title and cast I figured this to be a high end B-movie with potential grindhouse influences.

In that regard, I was disappointed. Instead, we get a pretty sincere drama focusing on a washed up and very much alone WWII veteran called Calvin Barr Sam Elliot whose wartime excursions are shown in a series of disorganised flashbacks.

As Calvin stews in the regret over both his actions and inactions in the past and begrudgingly persists through old age he is approached by a nameless CIA operative portrayed by Ron Livingston who requests that he comes out of retirement and serve his country one more time by hunting down the mythical bigfoot in….

Wow, I expected to like this movie so much more. I wanted this to embrace the ridiculous premise and it does; in the last 20 minutes. Prior to that; this is a boring , slowly paced and uninteresting character exploration.

The only redeeming factor other than the semi-entertaining final act is the performance from Sam Elliot , who is great.

He gives it his all in a film that is extremely sincere, with a premise that requires something different. They try to get you invested in a family-centric story….

The title of this film deserves to win awards on it's own, because it's the most accurate depiction of what you're going to see on screen all year.

I've rarely been as excited to see a film just from it's title as I was when this popped up on Netflix, and it even starred the legend that is Sam Elliott.

Imagine then my disappointment when this didn't live up to those lofty expectations, and although Elliott yet again came across as the coolest dude to walk the Earth since Steve McQueen, he deserved better.

Elliott plays Calvin Barr, a retiree with a fascinating past. Calvin minds his own business, lives modestly with his dog, and reminisces about his WWII exploits….

SFF 18, Nr.

I love the straightforward title of this movie. That is where my love ends for anything about it. To me, the title is reminiscent of other no-nonsense titles like "Snakes on a Plane" or "Hobo With a Shotgun.

This one was saturated with nonsense. A good chunk of the film was filled with flashbacks that felt anything but seamless, and frankly would have been better without.

Something about the dialogue felt forced and disjointed. I believe that fault lies partly with the director and partly with the editing.

I've seen a lot of negativity surrounding this one, which I think is understandable all things considered. The title alone suggests something a lot campier, more action packed.

Instead the film we got was very somber and serious, with both titular conflicts being handled more in passing, as set pieces to the more personal story of lost love and regret.

It's a good looking picture, shot in some gorgeous landscapes, with particularly great use of lighting. Elliott is wonderful, really bringing the emotion to the forefront.

I appreciate these elements, but it doesn't mean the film doesn't have issues. The supporting cast is largely just okay, with no one else really making a strong impression.

Particularly in the love story…. This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. I just kept waiting for something to happen the whole movie.

The story was paced wrong and the story had flaws. I give it credit though because it didn't look horrible and was well shot.

Sam Elliot leads the cast and gives a strong, nuanced performance as a man haunted by his past. But the storytelling is poor; requiring the audience to fill in a lot of blanks.

And the characters aren't developed very well. A slow, meandering film that doesn't live up to its potential, The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot is incredibly disappointing.

Dann M Super Reviewer. Feb 12, Firstly, having your film led by the amazingly talented Sam Elliott is always a plus. His performances always elevate the material, no matter how good or bad it actually is.

The premise is as simple as a man who killed Hitler back in World War II, who is now living a lonely simple life as an elderly man, is recruited to hunt down and kill Bigfoot.

The notion of this being a a film with a tone that takes its premise seriously is preposterous, but if you can leave that behind you, this is a fantastic character study.

Yes, this is a plot that will turn many viewers off and the finale of the film does go a little off the rails, but this character in Calvin Barr really had me engaged.

The third act of this movie is pretty much what you would expect it to be, given the ridiculous title, but the way things are handled and quickly edited together to wrap everything up felt like a letdown.

There are multiple spots this film could have chosen to end, but it felt like it kept on going. This is where I found my largest gripes with the movie.

Due to this, I was losing interest throughout the final 20 minutes. The third act will absolutely lose many viewers, but I bought into it enough and had some fun with it.

As a whole, this is a very, very solid movie that I would recommend checking out. KJ P Super Reviewer. See all Audience reviews. There are no approved quotes yet for this movie.
